What's in the Archives?

The
Archives' collection of histories
of the parishes of the diocese
of Huron can appear in many forms: published books, booklets, pamphlets,
bulletins or programs, or newspaper clippings. Some of the parish
histories are written by individuals who take on the project on
behalf of the church community, while other parishes form committees
who share in the work of putting together a publication. Many are
written to commemorate an important anniversary of the parish and
its church.

| Some
parish histories begin with a general history of the community, while
others focus specifically on the history of the church building, including
costs and additions, lists of memorials and gifts of the primary pieces
of furniture and stained glass windows. Many of the more extensive
histories include photographs of the exterior and interior of the
church and members of the congregation participating in significant
parish events, such as weddings and sod turnings. Parish histories
may also include histories of church organizations, such as women's
guilds and youth groups. An historical list of rectors,
organists, and choir directors may also be noted in the publication.
In some cases, more than one church was built and then rebuilt on
the same site, and some histories chronicle the entire lifespan of
a church, including its closing. Parish histories are arranged by
community name within the archives. |
