Archival Facilities

The Diocese of Huron houses one-of-a-kind, primary materials which are unpublished and irreplaceable. Due to the age of most of the documents, the papers may be fragile, requiring special conditions in order to maintain the contained information. Extensive compact shelving occupies one-quarter of the 1800 square feet of the new space. A temperature and humidity controlled environment assures longevity of records. Patrons are encouraged to use materials in our well-supervised reading room, provided with four electrical outlets allowing use of personal computers. Our facility is wheelchair accessible.

A microfilm reader and a photocopier are available. Photocopies can be provided only if the condition of the material warrants. Copies are made by the archivist, and may be used only for private research and reference. The Archives owns the copyright of the material held. Reference to the Diocese of Huron Verschoyle Philip Memorial Archives would be appreciated when referring to archival material.

Records are given outright to the Diocese of Huron Archives and are thereafter regarded as the property of the Archives without liability upon the donor. The copyright is transferred to the Diocese of Huron Archives. The Diocesan Archives welcomes donations, but reserves the right to accept or decline collections not considered suitable to its mandate. Materials will be available to researchers according to policy established by the Archives committee.
